Lakeside Mine Abyss

A Strange world

This World is strange, no Magic or things from our world, our Story.. a fable for these humans to read… how did we.. Really end up here in this world?… we talked to this Child and he was kind enough to Let us stay in his Small Home, he had so many thing a.. very Rich and advanced person would have in a home, Back home only the ones who had such Pluming was the Ruling Families, but it seems like Everyone can have such things. they have such Strange things we thing are Magic that are not, as this Kid Benny says, as we are all curious about everything and wondering what everything is and being Scared by this Scrying pool that they call.. a TV.. its odd. he had Brought out this.. little metal object that can easily cast Messager or .. something like that. its small and easy to use for them. it was a while before Benny’s Brother, Kyle ,showed up. he was.. i would say.. Amazed yet Shocked at how our … Costumes where… we had to explained to him that we are not in Costumes, and i ended up Sneezing where i showed my Self… i hate when i do that.. they thought i was.. some.. “furry”… i mean i am Covered in my furs and what not… but i don really understand this Term.. i must ask about this another time

well.. we Decided to Leave with both of these Children, Kyle who is helping us. Who Told us we are Characters in books he Reads.. we found out that this Man, Mr. Luther Kan, has.. been Writing about us.. he knows our Stories.. who we are.. what we have Done this man probly knows what is going to happen to us and how we can get back, he must have Magic or soemthing to help us get home… i miss home… my family.. Miwa.. i.. hope Miwa is alright.. i miss her so.. i really hope she doesnt feel like i abondened her.. this feeling of.. not having her around is.. crushing me.. we need to get Back as soon as we can..

i feel Sorry for Kaia, she is not Taking Traveling in this Metal Box very well, Kyle made it clear that we cant go on our Own in this World or we will be Killed. but some of the Food here Tastes really well.. Kaia has taking to liking this Bubbly Sweet Drink, the food here is not like our world the spices are so Different yet simaler but they seem to have it in more easy Access then we do, they even have Food from Tian Xia, i was surprized by this, Eating the food Reminds me of home… i should take some time to Travel back there to see my Family.. but that is a long.. long Journey from where Lakeside is.

the… little amout of Forestry here.. is unsettling… i feel Disconnected with the Lack of Nature here, Kyle Promised we would find some Forest when we Stoped, i hope its not.. disappointing, i do wish to feel what this Worlds Nature is like, i hope its not upset by the amount of people on its land. the things here have Kept me Distracted enough by, my mind does keep turning to where i see no forest… i… dont know how mch longer it will be before i break Down from the Lack of nature here.. i hope Kyle and Benny can help us.. or.. this Man Luther.. i.. cant let the others know how much this world is Effecting me.

A Journal entry
Holy Cayden, Where Are We?!

Dear Journal,
20 Erastus, 4598 AR give or take a few days while we were unconscious…

I’m putting these events down in ink and paper because I’ve found, in the past, that its a good method to sort out what the hell just happened! I haven’t been this confused since Barley Sniffenwager talked me into suspending myself from the ceiling with a rope to take a bath (he told me it would ensure I wouldn’t drown and we had had a few too many ales that night). This situation wasn’t nearly as humorous, though, it seems to be quite a bit more confusing and I don’t think it’ll be able to be repaired with some paint and my famous hangover stew.

You see, I’m not even sure where I am at the moment, or what day it is. One minute we were facing down an enormous black dragon and the next we’re waking up in a bazaar looking city where I don’t even know if people use magic or some queer form of artificing. I am sure that my God, Cayden, interfered to save me and my fellow adventurers, but did he have to do it in such a confusing manner? Maybe this is the result of too much whiskey on his part and we are just experiencing a Godly hangover.

I should write what I remember, from the beginning. First, we were investigating the mines after discovering that some strange creatures were escaping from the tunnels there. They were creatures that I have never experienced in my 125 years on this plane.

Our first foray into the Lakeside mines was unpleasant, but with a few bracers of brandy, I felt that I could put the experience behind me and do what was necessary to save the town and my inn. Little did I know just how bad things were going to get (If I had, I would have packed something stronger than mere ale)!

I packed the camp gear on poor ole Maurice and went back to the mine with the others the following morning. Even after the loss of Kalob and a particularly nasty cave in, I felt confident that we could ferret out the misplaced creatures and figure out a way to block the mine shafts so that the town would be safe. My spirit was lifted when we faced off with the first creature we encountered; a strange reptilian thing that I had never seen before. After Kaia flexed her muscles and we all threw a little of our might at him, he fled in terror.

Tsubaki felt that we should track it so that we could find out where it came into the caverns from or a portal that it might have used. We went a ways through the tunnel and came out into an extremely large cavern that was naturally occurring. It was so large, in fact, that even my torch wasn’t very good at spreading light.

Now pay attention, journal. This is where things got strange…

Tsubaki suggested that she light an arrow on fire and shoot it deeper into the cavern to get a better idea of what was in there. Normally, I don’t interfere with nature experts, especially ones that change into animals, but this time something compelled me to stop her. I tried to reason that we might not want to let anything in the cavern know that we were there, but Tsubaki ignored my voice of reason and went ahead and made the shot anyways (I’ve written in you before about how I feel about being ignored…) Annnyyyways, it did what she promised it would and we were able to see into the cavern.

When I saw the Black Dragon I immediately shooed Maurice away to take cover! I’m afraid I will never know for sure if he was under cover when the acid struck. If I weren’t screaming so loudly, I would have been able to hear if he whined or not.

It must have been then that Cayden set down his bottle of whiskey and intervened. I woke up with the rest of our group in the middle of some impossibly tall, masonry, buildings with stairs that were attached to the bricks way above the ground (too far up for any normal sized creatures to make any use of them). There is a refuse smelling metal box with a sign on it states that some creature named dumpster would be picked up there at a particular time on a holiday named Monday. The ground is covered by a strange rocky substance that seems to have spread out until it destroyed all the trees and grass. We did encounter some human native children who completely freaked out when Kaia flew above the buildings (I wonder what they expected her to do with her wings?!) and now I wonder if these people might not have wizards or clerics who know the “fly” spell. They might just be way behind us in that regard.

As I write this, I’m not sure how we will survive our first night here. We’ll have to try to find an inn because all of my gear went bye bye when Maurice bolted and Cayden didn’t see it fit to save him with the rest of us.

Even though my heart is broken over Maurice and I will certainly miss my nice comfortable inn and fully stocked liqueur cabinet, I’m more worried about Tsubaki who will, unfortuately, have to survive without her wolf.

I’m sure glad my flask survived, I really need a drink!

And so it begins...
Why start at the beginning?

The ragtag group was ambivalently called “The Enforcers”. The name fit, and for some we were their guardians, their protectors, and their “light in the dark.” Those who just wanted to live peaceably and not get into trouble saw us that way. Others still, felt that we were a hindrance. What was a meaningless bar-fight now and again? It had been too long since the crime boss’ terrible, if however short, reign. People were becoming complacent. Something sinister stirred now, deep within the mine. The towns sole reason for existing, and many’s only source of income and livelihood.

The morning began with a strange stillness in the air not perceivable by all. Most were too caught up in their lives to notice such small out of the ordinary things. Kaia the Watcher could feel it, however, as she sat on a perch, above the town, looking down at its strange goings-on. It was the first day of Last Drop, a festival to celebrate the last caravan of supplies coming into town before hunkering down to outlast the cold. Kaia watched as the humans drank themselves into stupors and got into fights. Kaia’s other Enforcers didn’t need her to handle each petty little problem. Some of the Enforcers even joined in the festivities.

Kaia watched through her spyglass, contemplating the stillness. It was off, but she didn’t as of yet understand why. The birds were too quiet, and they didn’t take to flight. Kaia saw Tsubaki, the fox-human who followed her to this town, surely coming to Kaia with news of something needing her attention. Kaia’s wings swiftly brought her to Tsubaki, who brought word of a miner who had lost his life, no doubt tripped in his intoxication and struck his head on a rock. Mayor Todd requested their presence to handle the investigation.

After meeting with The Mayor Todd and retrieving Coal, the others followed Kaia to the lake, where some of their Squeebs guarded the body from curious onlookers. The bloated corpse bore a scar placed by a creature called an Aboleth. While Kaia did not know what this creature was, Her two Enforcers Tsubaki and Coal were able to supply information about this intelligent aquatic horror. Before Kaia was able to discover the location of this creature a deep concerning thrum came from the mountain that housed the mine. Bellowing long, it caused the lake to loose several thousands of gallons of water, leaving it several feet lower than before.

Hoping to find this Aboleth, Kaia sent Tsubaki and Wadka back to town with the body. The creature would have to wait, as the mine started belching forth steam in disconcerting amount. Kaia and her Enforcers decided that the town should be evacuated while they investigate this geothermal oddity. While there was initially some resistance from concerned shareholders, seeking to hire others to investigate. Kaia knew this would end in only more useless death, so she decided to take only one of their members to act as her guide.

Kaia led her Enforcers deep into the mines labyrinthine tunnels, finding strange overgrown spiders, and an eldritch spider-human hybrid abomination. While Kaia and her Enforcers were able to defeat this monstrosities, they were eventually arrested by a cave in. It was devastating to them all, and fatal to their guide. Retreat was the only option at this point, and even though Kaia did not like it, it was the only option. Their path was stoppered by rubble and Kaia experienced something she had not since childhood, fear. Kaia was accustomed to open skies and free movement, so to be trapped in this oubliette was a terror she could scarcely handle. While Kaia set her heavy-handed Selena on the task of clearing the rubble, she gave herself a sedative to calm down. The sedative had sever hallucinogenic side effects, so while Kaia saw visions of ethereal three-headed rabbits and incorporeal dancing turtles that beckoned her to follow them into the mines deeper depths, her capable compatriots spirited her away to safety.

Kaia woke in one of their rooms in their hedonism house to the sound of the four-legged slobber-monster pulling it’s tiny owner away. While this event was not strange in and of itself, Kaia felt a more dreadful foreboding and followed to investigate. While trying to hold back the hound, Wadka professed an ignorance to its destination. Kaia sent Wadka back to wake the others, while she went forward in their stead. Kaia found Tsubaki fending for her life from another spider abomination, this one however, had no human counterpart. It spewed forth acidic vomit, and had tentacles protruding from its legs instead of feet. Kaia distracted it from the air, while Tsubaki and her canine companion kited it, as they bided their time for the others to arrive.

Coming down like destruction from above, Selina struck the creature upon the back, effectively redirecting its attention away from the injured Tsubaki, and with the force of the lot of them combined, Kaia and her Enforcers were able to destroy the Monster with minimal damages. Had Kaia the Watcher been cognizant when they returned from their mine foray, this could have been avoided, she could only blame herself. Two things were certain, however, more exploration was necessary, and the townsfolk needed to remain safely at a distance until answers could be obtained.
